At Gonyea Custom Homes, the premier custom home builder Minnesota residents trust, we believe a home is more than just a structure—it’s a reflection of the people who live within its walls. We’re sitting down with our in-house design expert, Lauren, to learn more about her journey and get her honest takes on the evolving landscape of home design as we head into 2026.
With nearly eight years at Gonyea Custom Homes, Lauren brings a blend of technical expertise and a heartfelt, personal approach to every project. Whether she is in the design studio or out on a job site, her goal is always the same: helping homeowners bring their unique visions to life through a dedicated custom home builder Minnesota experience.
The Story Behind the Design
For Lauren, design isn’t just a career; it’s a lifelong passion. Inspired early on by her grandfather’s remodeling skills and a pivotal interior design class in high school, she pursued her degree at Alexandria Technical & Community College.
After an internship in kitchen and bath remodeling, she joined our team, where she has spent nearly a decade helping clients navigate the journey from concept to completion. When she isn’t helping clients, Lauren is likely embracing the “hands-on” lifestyle herself.
“Outside of work, my world revolves around my family,” Lauren shares. “I have a hands-on, creative side and enjoy DIY projects and remodeling our home, always finding ways to make it feel even more like us.”
Lauren’s Hot Design Takes for 2026
What can we expect from the design world in 2026? According to Lauren, the “stark” look is taking a backseat to something much more inviting and character-driven, a specialty of our Minnesota design team.
● The Big Prediction: Lauren is forecasting a move toward organic shapes, natural materials, and vintage-inspired touches. Expect to see designs that feel “lived-in” and full of personality.
● Warmth Over Contrast: While high-contrast black has dominated recent years, Lauren believes it is on its way out. “I’ve been gravitating toward dark bronze windows instead of black to create a warmer, more subtle aesthetic,” she notes.
● The New Palette: Neutral tones are still leading the way, but they are becoming deeper and richer. The focus for 2026 is on a timeless, inviting feel rather than making bold, loud statements.
Lauren’s Advice: Break the Rules
While trends provide a great starting point, Lauren’s personal philosophy is centered on the individual homeowner. When asked which design “rule” people should feel free to break in 2026, her answer was simple: The trends themselves.
“I think people should feel free to break free from trends and follow what truly feels right for them,” she says. “Your home is where you should feel most comfortable, so trust your own style and what makes you happy.”
