1950s Kitchen Remodel and Dormer Addition

When this couple was found out they were expecting they started to look for a new home for their family. Even though they loved their neighborhood, after visiting open house after open house they couldn’t find anything in the area at the right price point that didn’t already need major remodeling. So, they decided to stay in their home and renovate it to fit their needs.

Redesigned with a new floor plan, kitchen, and owners’ suite – this adorable cottage in St. Paul is the perfect home for this family of three. On the main floor, the new open floor plan is bright and open, inviting gorgeous natural light into every room. Upstairs, a dormer addition creates extra space for a much needed owners’ suite with a walk-in closet and en suite bath.

Before and After – Dining room remodel in St. Paul

Before and After: Bright and Open Main Level Floorplan

On the main level, a new open floor plan connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas. After expanding narrow doorways into wide openings, laying new wood floors, and repainting with neutral gray tones – the new first floor feels brighter and more spacious than ever.

Fewer walls means natural light can now filter through the entire house, bringing with it positive energy and well-being.

In the new white kitchen, the oven and gas range moved to the outside wall – sharing a counter top with the sink and dishwasher. New floors blend in with the dining room and the gentle gray walls add warmth while reflecting light.

Joining the kitchen and dining room with created enough space to build and install a custom center island with additional seating and storage. Smartly placed on the border between the kitchen and dining room, the island knits the two spaces together.

Before and After – Dormer addition in St. Paul

Before and After: A New Roof and Dormer

In anticipation of their little one and a need for a little privacy and relaxation, we built a new owners’ suite for these new parents. A dormer addition created the extra headroom necessary for an en suite bath and walk-in closet.

Adding an owners suite brings big happiness. Think about it: the bedroom is where we start and end everyday. Creating the perfect space to rest and recharge will add major joy to these homeowners' day-to-day lives.

The walk-in closet keeps the sleeping area free from dirty-clothes islands. And an en suite bathroom gives a little extra luxury to those who will appreciate it most – mom and dad.
